YOUR QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM MELISSA CROSS
Newsletter #1 “DO IT YOUR WAY and DO IT RIGHT”
QUESTION: I'm a girl, and I'm really interested in hardcore music (Every Time I Die) I'm 15, and I play the guitar and the drums, and to top it off, I would like to be able to scream/sing/yell. I admire Keith Buckley's voice, and I was wondering if you have ever worked with girls who have a desire to sound anything like him (without sounding too much like a man). I was also wondering if the advice you would give would differ from his because of age and gender. Thanks! ANSWER: Firstly, the most important thing to know is that you should never want to sound LIKE anything or LIKE anyone. It won't sound good if you are imitating anything. The reason that you love Keith Buckley is because Keith sounds as much like Keith as Keith can. Keith does Keith awesomely --much better than you ever will. But Keith won't be sounding like YOU, even if you WERE a guy- because then he would not be coming from that place that makes you love Keith so much!
So, the journey for you is to be YOU. And that means understanding your vocal instrument intuitively, like you will understand your guitar and drums the more you play them! As far as being 15, you should know that it is particularly important for you to be learning how to use your voice correctly NOW. It is not fully developed yet, and you could cause some serious damage by doing extreme vocals incorrectly that will limit you in the future.
