Q: I’m getting a lot of crap from some of the guys in my band. I am trained, but mainly by choral professors. Basically, they think that I need more depth and edge to my vocal sound. The funny thing is, I agree with them, but have no idea where to begin. It may sound stupid, but I have no idea how to find my own style. I can sing I just need to learn how to do so with more of a rock edge. If you can help that would be great.
A: I think what the guys are probably talking about and maybe not explaining very well is that they want you to sound like you are speaking, not singing. Training sometimes tells us that "singing" means we are supposed to be doing something other than what it feels like to just speak to someone (or yell at them, if you prefer). There is probably a prettiness or some obvious intention to sound "good" or "like" something or someone else that offends their sense of sincerity and reality and makes you sound "old fashioned".
The DVD addresses technique in such a way that singing doesn't feel like “singing” anymore. It will also help you to develop your vocal technique so that your emotions and your dreams don't lock up in your throat.
It's great to have heroes, we all do. It is even more important that you don't try to BE them, but rather identify with what it is you love about them, and integrate it into your sound by experiencing that same feeling when you sing
Don’t listen to your voice. BE your voice.
