Q: I'm planning on buying the DVD, but I had a quick question. I have a pretty deep voice, so my growls are deep. Are there any tips or tricks to expanding my growls/screams to be higher? Any help will be appreciated.
A: What you should be seeking in a “higher” scream is not a “replacement” of the low tones, but rather the “addition” of overtone that makes it seem higher to the listener. The ultimate scream comes from a person who can access highs and lows simultaneously. It is not good to think of the scream as a higher “pitch” such as in the context of what one might perceive from listening to a Sebastian Bach/Robert Plant “sung” note. For example, listen to D. Randall Blythe from “Lamb of God” or Byron Davis from “God Forbid” (both guys are in the DVD). They are bona fide baritones, but they have the capability of opening the space in the throat at the same time they are closing the false cords. The DVD will explain the difference between the true cords and the false cords. It will explain the finesse of squeezing the false cords without unnecessary velocity. That will enable more control, the ability to access more overtone with the lowering of the larynx and, as a result, less damage. More importantly, it will give you the technique to access more overtone in your speaking, singing and your scream. This is achieved by a new awareness of your instrument and very specific practice using the vocal mechanism with a greater emphasis on breath support and proper vocal cord placement. You need to go through the whole process, not just skip to the scream chapter for quick results. Good luck and thanks for writing!
